At its Jan. 8 meeting, the Whitfield County Board of Commissioners approved several fiscal actions including a $2.5 million transfer from the Dalton/Whitfield Regional Solid Waste Management Authority to the county General Fund.
Commissioner Greg Jones moved and Commissioner John Thomas seconded the resolution authorizing the transfer; the motion was approved 4-0. The board also approved the November 2023 financial statement as presented by Chief Finance Officer Debbie Godfrey. Godfrey reported November LOST collections of $1,358,981 (22.78% above the budgeted $1,106,858), year-to-date revenues of $41,966,233 (above projected revenues by $4,629,242) and an ending November fund balance of $24,922,936 — figures recorded in the meeting minutes.
Separately, the board approved payment to the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) for the county's recommended 2023 Defined Benefit plan contribution in the amount of $2,357,168.00 after a motion by Commissioner Jones and second by Commissioner Robbins; the motion was recorded as approved 4-0.
Why it matters: The Solid Waste transfer and the ACCG contribution are material budgetary decisions; the transfer increases available funds in the General Fund and the ACCG payment fulfills a retirement-plan contribution obligation.
What’s next: County finance staff will implement the transfer and post the payment to ACCG; commissioners will continue to monitor monthly financial reports.
