Public Works Director Jason Jordan told the board at the April 2 workshop that Tift County will receive supplemental LMIG funding from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) totaling $1,006,041.13 and asked the board to authorize staff to prepare bid documents via an engineering addendum with Watkins and Associates.
Jordan outlined two roads staff recommends for LMIG resurfacing/widening — Chula Brookfield Road (from Hwy 41 to the Tift–Irwin county line) and Brighton Road (from I-75 to Hwy 125) — and said construction is estimated at about $1.8 million, with any overages proposed to be paid from SPLOST VI.
Jordan also described GDOT's Safety Action Plan (SAP) funding for striping and raised pavement markers, noting the county would receive approximately $240,000 to target roads GDOT’s data show as higher-risk; staff requested funding to stripe additional local roads (estimated $219,689) with SPLOST VI as a funding source if necessary. An engineering addendum for SAP bid documents was quoted at $10,800.
On bridges, Jordan said GDOT asked the county to identify bridges in need of replacement; staff recommended two bridges on Ty Ty Whiddonmill Road over Little River and one bridge on Ferry Lake Road over the Alapaha River. Jordan also asked the board to certify two recently completed T-SPLOST/TIA bridge projects (Salem Church Road Bridge over Little Creek and Mitchell Store Road Bridge over Arnold Creek) and accept responsibility for ongoing operation and maintenance.
Separately, Jordan described an urgent repair on Hunt Road: a hole had opened in the right-of-way and staff recommended replacing two 48-inch pipes with concrete pipe and building a junction box. Construction is estimated at $300,000 and the engineering addendum price is $29,800 to be funded from T-SPLOST/TIA.
The board did not vote on these items at the workshop but indicated they should be placed on the April 8 consent agenda or otherwise returned for formal action at the regular meeting.
