Coffee County approves road equipment purchase and several resurfacing and striping contracts

The Coffee County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously March 7 to buy two motor graders, award a countywide patching and resurfacing contract and accept a low bid for a Georgia DOT-funded striping project.
County Administrator Wesley Vickers told commissioners the bids for two motor graders — one standard and one sloper — ranged from $254,388 to $332,660. He recommended Flint Equipment (Flint Deere) because it offered the quickest delivery and a seven-year full-machine warranty; Commissioner Jimmy Kitchens moved to approve the Flint Equipment bid and Commissioner Johnny Wayne Jowers seconded the motion. The board approved the purchase unanimously.
Vickers also presented bids for a DOT-funded Safety Improvement Project that covers striping and signage. The county received three bids; Roadside Specialties submitted the low bid at $189,647.85. Commissioner Ted O'Steen moved to accept the low bid; Commissioner Oscar Paulk seconded and the board voted unanimously to award the contract to Roadside Specialties.
For patching and resurfacing of various county roads, the county received a single bid from East Coast Asphalt, LLC for $3,879,436.17. Vickers said the figure was slightly over budget but within range; Commissioner Jimmy Kitchens moved to approve the bid, seconded by Commissioner Jowers, and the board voted unanimously to award the contract.
The board also approved an annual brush-spraying contract with Bristow LLC at $20,000 per spray list (about $115 per acre). County Road Superintendent Wendell Troupe, who was cited as satisfied with Bristow's past work, was the staff contact on the item. Commissioner Ted O'Steen moved to approve the contract and Commissioner Kitchens seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
The actions advance several county maintenance and safety programs; Vickers said the county administers the DOT projects for participating municipalities and will receive 2.5% of each project's cost for administrative services.
