Coffee County adopts broadband plan amendment to pursue grant funding

The Coffee County Board of Commissioners on Aug. 1 unanimously adopted a resolution to amend the 2018 Coffee County and the Cities of Ambrose, Broxton, Douglas and Nicholls Broadband Element Comprehensive Plan, a change County Attorney Tony Rowell said will allow the county to pursue broadband grant funding.
The amendment, reviewed at the meeting by Rowell, formally adds a broadband element to the county and participating cities' comprehensive plan. Chairman AJ Dovers called for a vote after Rowell described the purpose; Commissioner Johnny Wayne Jowers moved to adopt the resolution and Commissioner Ted O'Steen seconded. The board voted unanimously to approve the amendment.
County officials said adopting the amendment is a procedural step required to be eligible for certain grant programs aimed at expanding high-speed internet access. No specific grant applications or funding sources were discussed at the meeting.
The resolution covers Coffee County and the cities of Ambrose, Broxton, Douglas and Nicholls. By adopting it, the county gains the formal planning authority to include broadband projects in its capital or infrastructure planning and to apply for relevant state and federal grants. No timeline for grant applications was provided.
The board moved on to other business after the vote; the meeting adjourned at 9:40 a.m.
