Fayette County board accepts Town of Tyrone annexation notification for about 99.9 acres along State Route 74

The Fayette County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 8 accepted a notification from the Town of Tyrone seeking annexation of two parcels totaling about 99.88 acres along State Route 74 N between Kirkley Road and the Fulton–Fayette county line.
Planning and Zoning Director Debbie Bell told the board the applications come from the Fayette County Development Authority and would not create an unincorporated island; both parcels have access to State Route 74. Bell provided a county map of the location and advised staff had no objection to the notification, while recommending discussion between Fayette County and the Town of Tyrone about project feasibility.
Mayor Eric Dial of Tyrone attended the meeting to observe and said the proposal had not yet been presented to Tyrone’s council. "I had limited knowledge on the project," Dial said, and noted that sediment, rock and wetland concerns on the property were being evaluated.
Commissioner Eric Maxwell said he appreciated Tyrone’s recent beautification efforts along State Route 74 and urged the town to maintain that aesthetic as the project develops, saying he hoped the town would "continue to be a shining spot for Fayette County." Commissioner Charles Rousseau asked for confirmation of acreage and staff confirmed the two parcels totaled approximately 99.88 acres.
Vice Chairman Edward Gibbons moved to approve the annexation notification; Commissioner Charles Oddo seconded. The motion passed 5-0. The notification does not itself finalize annexation — it informs Fayette County and triggers coordination with the Town of Tyrone and subsequent consideration by Tyrone’s council and any required review steps.
Next steps noted at the meeting include continued evaluation of wetland and sediment conditions and further consideration by the Town of Tyrone council; county staff recommended intergovernmental discussion to determine feasibility and desired project outcomes.
