Charles Mix County commissioners re‑elect leadership, set appointments and administrative policies

At their Jan. 5 regular meeting, the Charles Mix County Board of Commissioners unanimously re‑elected Colin Soukup as chair and Kory Standy as vice chair, approved board appointments, official newspapers, online public notices, mileage policy per SDCL 3‑9, and the 2026 county holiday schedule.
Colin Soukup was re‑elected chairman of the Charles Mix County Board of Commissioners and Kory Standy was elected vice chairman during the board’s Jan. 5 regular session at the County Courthouse in Lake Andes. Auditor Jason Gant called for nominations; motions to nominate and to close nominations passed unanimously, and the board cast unanimous ballots for both leadership positions.
The commissioners also approved a slate of board assignments: Nick Stotz to RC & D, Lewis & Clark, Drainage, District III and E911 boards; Soukup to ROCS, Drainage, Juvenile, Fair and Extension boards; Standy to the Weed, Drainage and Landfill boards; and Auditor Jason Gant as alternate to all county boards. The board declared the Platte Enterprise, Charles Mix County News, Lake Andes Wave and Wagner Post the county’s official newspapers and voted to publish public notices both in those papers and on the county website.
By motion, the board adopted SDCL 3‑9 as the standard for mileage, meals and lodging reimbursement when county officials travel on business. It also approved the county office closure schedule for 2026, listing observed holidays from New Year’s Day through Christmas and including Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Juneteenth, Native American Day and other state‑recognized days.
The board set polling locations for the 2026 primary and general elections across precincts 01–13 (for example, Wagner Armory, Dante Church Center, Lake Andes 4‑H Center and Geddes Multi‑Purpose Building). All of the procedural motions recorded in the minutes passed on unanimous votes.
The meeting record shows commissioners briefly reviewed and confirmed receipt of an Attorney General open‑meetings handout presented by State’s Attorney Steve Cotton; each commissioner verbally confirmed the review. The board set its next regular sessions for Jan. 22 and Feb. 12 at 10:00 a.m. at the courthouse.
