Charles Mix County designates Brosz Engineering as county bridge engineer; highway repairs and load concerns raised

Charles Mix County commissioners voted Feb. 12 to designate Brosz Engineering as the county’s engineer for bridge projects involving the South Dakota Department of Transportation. The measure was approved on a motion by Commissioner Nick Stotz, seconded by Vice Chairman Kory Standy.
Highway Foreman Jerry Horst briefed the board on planned bridge repairs, an anticipated bid letting scheduled for March 26, 2026, and gravel plans for the year. Horst’s presentation framed the county’s near-term priorities for highway maintenance and bridge work.
During the highway update, resident Mike Denker raised concerns about load limits on structure STR.# 12-470-368 in Wahehe Township. Commissioners directed staff to gather additional information on the bridge’s rating and condition and to return with findings at the next meeting.
The designation of Brosz Engineering formalizes the county’s engineering relationship for DOT bridge projects and helps the county proceed with DOT-driven project development and bidding processes. No vote tally of individual commissioners was recorded in the minutes other than the entry "All in favor, motion carried."
The board also discussed a Golden West request and other highway operational items but took no immediate action beyond the engineering designation and staff follow-up on the Wahehe Township bridge.
