Commission hears briefing on elected official salaries, gives preliminary direction

Carey Deaver, Minnehaha County Human Resources Director, briefed the Commission on elected official salary history, comparisons to department head salaries and market data, and requested direction for future action to be taken Dec. 15, 2020.
Commissioners suggested potential changes: a 5% increase for both the Register of Deeds and the Sheriff, setting the State’s Attorney salary at $137,000, starting the newly elected Treasurer at the base salary, and setting the newly appointed Auditor at $114,400. Deaver noted that future adjustments would need to be divisible by the number of pay periods.
No formal salary ordinance or resolution was adopted at the Dec. 8 meeting; the Commission will consider formal action at its Dec. 15 session.
