Building committee receives updates on Highway Facility, administration and extension remodels; gravel pit sale closing set

Minnehaha County staff updated the Building Committee March 23 on several capital and facility projects, including the Highway Facility, the Extension Building remodel, and planned changes to the Administration Building. The committee also heard that the county’s gravel pit sold at auction in February and is scheduled to close March 30, 2021.
Craig Dewey, assistant commission administrative officer, said design documents for the Highway Facility have been reviewed and will be turned over to the Construction Manager At-Risk. Staff reviewed the location of structural columns as part of the floorplan and said Building 7 will be relocated for future use; staff also said they are considering options to prevent drainage issues at the site.
On the Extension Building remodel, Dewey said the floorplan has been revised to meet budgetary needs and that the roof needs replacement. The basement contains concrete walls, most of which are load-bearing, limiting options for interior reconfiguration. Facilities Director Mark Kriens said a roof inspection had been completed and that he would seek a second opinion before deciding the course of action.
Staff described plans for the Administration Building remodel that would move the Commission Office to the third floor and place the State’s Attorney’s Office on the second floor. An area on the third floor would be set aside to conduct certain election activities.
Dewey also informed the committee that the county gravel pit was sold at auction in February with a closing date scheduled for March 30, 2021. There was no formal vote on any project funding or construction contract during the meeting; the session was informational and the committee approved prior minutes before adjourning.
Next steps identified in the updates include turning design documents over to the construction manager for the Highway Facility and obtaining a second roof inspection for the Extension Building before committing to replacement and construction sequencing decisions.
