Lipscomb County Commissioners on Jan. 12 voted to rescind paid COVID-19 leave benefits and to require that COVID-related absences be charged to employees' existing leave balances, effective immediately.
The resolution states that the paid COVID-19 leave provisions implemented during the public-health emergency are terminated and that absences on or after the effective date will be charged to sick leave, vacation leave, compensatory time or other applicable leave categories in accordance with county personnel policies. The Treasurer's Office was directed to update personnel manuals and notify employees of the change. The motion passed unanimously (motion: Brandon Meier; second: Juan Cantu).
Minutes also record a related administrative update: the county's COVID-leave policy was revised so employees must use sick leave if they have a COVID diagnosis. Elected officials were instructed to record office closures in the minutes when deviating from regular hours; weather-related closures remain eligible for administrative leave under the updated handbook provisions approved at the same meeting.
County officials and the court characterized the change as a return to standard leave practices following the end of the public-health emergency. Employees seeking detail on how the change affects them were directed to await updated personnel guidance and notices to be issued by the Treasurer's Office and County Clerk.
