Pre-audit work aims to clean up county books; commissioners approve budget amendments

County auditors and a CPA reported that pre-audit work has improved Washington County's books and recommended integrated software; commissioners approved budget amendments and transfers unanimously.
At the Nov. 4 meeting, CPA James Best told the Board that auditors will not be able to participate in the county closeout in future years because of a new law, and he reviewed the pre-audit work completed with county staff.
Finance Officer Missy Dixon said the pre-audit has been beneficial and that new procedures are in place to address a prior finding about segregation of duties. Best recommended the county purchase integrated software that interfaces with the finance system and implement a depreciation program; Dixon said there appears to be a depreciation function in Edmunds that must be connected to tax software.
After the discussion, Commissioner Phelps moved to approve the budget amendments and transfers included in the packet; Commissioner Riddick seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Finance staff said they expect next year’s audit to be 'significantly cleaner' and that they may retain Best’s services in a limited capacity as staff transitions to running the process internally.
