Washington County appoints Chair D. Cole Phelps to Beaufort County Community College trustees seat

Commissioner Johnson moved and the board unanimously appointed Chair D. Cole Phelps to fill Washington County’s representative seat on the Beaufort County Community College Board of Trustees after the prior representative moved out of the county.
At the Jan. 13 recessed meeting, the Washington County Board of Commissioners appointed Chair D. Cole Phelps to represent the county on the Beaufort County Community College Board of Trustees.
Commissioner Johnson explained that when the General Assembly selected Beaufort County Community College to operate a Washington County satellite campus, the law allowed Washington County to appoint a trustee to that board. The county’s previous representative, Jean Woolard, had a term that expired Dec. 31, 2019 and is moving from Washington County, creating a vacancy.
Commissioner Johnson moved to appoint Chair Phelps; Commissioner Riddick seconded the motion. Commissioners asked procedural questions — Mr. Walker asked about meeting frequency and Commissioner Sexton asked whether the representative must be a commissioner. Commissioner Johnson said the trustee meetings occur the first Tuesday of even-numbered months at 5:00 p.m. and that the representative does not have to be a commissioner. The motion carried unanimously.
The appointment was recorded under Boards & Committees (Item 1A) and will take effect per the college’s scheduling and board procedures.
