County begins outreach for proposed one-quarter cent local option sales tax

Allysa Rouse, Management Fellow for Washington County, told commissioners on Feb. 3 that county staff are conducting a multi-channel outreach campaign ahead of a proposed one-quarter cent local option sales tax referendum.
Rouse said she has been distributing flyers and signs, producing commercials that will run on the county webpage, placing radio announcements and newspaper ads, and preparing informational cards. She said community forums are scheduled in Plymouth, Roper and Creswell in the coming weeks and that she has been speaking at local meetings to explain the referendum.
Chair D. Cole Phelps stressed the importance of passage, saying a successful referendum would reduce the risk of needing to raise property taxes during the county’s upcoming budget process.
No vote or formal board direction on campaign tactics was recorded beyond staff’s outreach plan; Rouse said staff will continue community engagement ahead of the referendum.
