Washington County commissioners reject $100,000 boost to hospital pension plan

Washington County commissioners declined on June 11 to add $100,000 to the county’s annual hospital pension contribution.
County Manager and County Attorney Curtis Potter told commissioners the county currently contributes $320,000 to the hospital pension plan and had distributed information that night about a proposed additional $100,000 contribution. Commissioner Walker moved to increase the appropriation; Commissioner Sexton seconded. Commissioners Walker and Sexton voted in favor, while Commissioners Johnson and Riddick and Chair D. Cole Phelps voted against the motion, and it failed.
Why it matters: The pension contribution represents a material county expenditure and the vote reflects commissioners’ differing views on increasing county support for the hospital pension amid broader budget constraints.
Potter said the Professional Services budget line might cover opioid-settlement-related expenses and outside counsel for Board of Adjustment hearings, which factored into broader budget deliberations but did not change the outcome of the pension vote.
The board will continue work on departmental budgets at a follow-up session on June 15.
