Residents push for animal-shelter improvements; board hears job-description and microchipping concerns

During the public-comment period Oct. 11, residents urged the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors to take steps to improve the county animal shelter.
Beth Reynolds handed the board a proposed job description she said would bring the Animal Rescue position into compliance with Virginia Code and presented photographs of dogs currently at the shelter. Reynolds also told the board that a shelter phone line is in place but not yet working. "The phone is in place at the shelter, but not in working order," she said.
Debbie Wilmar suggested that animals be microchipped so their owners can be located when strays are brought to the shelter. Supervisor Garland H. Hamlett Jr. later told the board he agreed the animal shelter needs improvement and asked Administrator Witt to consider better arrangements.
The board did not take formal action on the shelter during this meeting; supervisors acknowledged the concerns and directed staff to include operational considerations in their ongoing reviews.
