Supervisor Walter T. Bailey, who presented the emergency-management committee’s findings, said the county faces an estimated three-year wait to obtain a new rescue squad if it follows typical procurement timelines. Bailey said he obtained an estimate from vendor Vest Sales and Service to remount a 2022 chassis at a cost of $197,160 and plans to apply for a 50/50 federal grant in February to cover half the cost. “The price would increase by the next week,” Bailey warned as he urged the board to act.
County Administrator Daniel Witt told the board that while the grant would be welcome, the county should be prepared to use general-fund dollars if the grant bid is unsuccessful because the need for the unit is urgent.
Bailey moved to purchase the unit and Vice Chairman Will Garnett seconded. All supervisors present voted Aye.
The board did not set a specific vendor contract deadline in public remarks; administrators indicated they would proceed with purchase logistics and pursue grant funding. Next steps described in the meeting were to prepare the procurement paperwork and attempt the federal grant application in February.
