Durham County proclaims June 29 'Durham Refugee Day'; community invited to Durham Central Park

On June 24 the Durham County Board of Commissioners issued a proclamation declaring June 29, 2024, "Durham Refugee Day," highlighting the county's tradition of welcoming refugees and urging residents to observe the day.
Commissioner Heidi Carter read the proclamation, which cited global displacement statistics and affirmed that inclusion and respect strengthen the Durham community. "Now therefore, I, Nimasheena Burns, Vice Chair and on behalf of the Durham Board of County Commissioners, do hereby proclaim June 29, 2024, as 'DURHAM REFUGEE DAY'," the proclamation states.
Kakou Nayo, Durham City/County Immigrant and Refugee Affairs Coordinator, thanked the board for the proclamation and introduced Ousmane Abdoulahi, a refugee leader who recently received U.S. citizenship. Abdoulahi said he was thankful to receive the proclamation on behalf of refugees and immigrants and invited the community to Durham Refugee Day on Saturday, June 29 from 3–6 p.m. at Durham Central Park.
The event was described in meeting notices as a free, family-friendly celebration with live music, community education booths and food vendors.
