Durham County received a presentation on the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) rewrite audit and proposed approach from a consultant team led by Code Studio.
The presentation summarized preliminary findings from a code audit, highlighted issues in the existing UDO and identified potential challenges for implementing the county’s Comprehensive Plan. Assistant Planning Director Bo Dobrzneski said staff will share materials with residents, solicit input on urban growth boundaries, and examine units-per-acre and site-specific options as part of drafting the new UDO.
The presentation framed the rewrite as a multi-step process that will require public engagement and technical analysis to align zoning and development standards with plan objectives. Staff indicated they will return with draft language and additional outreach plans as the project advances.
