Durham commissioners adopt proclamations for MED Week and Rooted in Wellness Day and honor Governor Cooper

The Durham County Board of Commissioners adopted two proclamations and a resolution at its Aug. 26 meeting, highlighting community events and recognizing statewide leadership.
Commissioner Heidi Carter read a proclamation designating Oct. 14–17, 2024 as Minority Enterprise Development (MED) Week in Durham County, citing county policies to promote equal contracting opportunities and referencing data from the Minority Business Development Agency on minority business growth. Shannon Trapp, the county’s chief of staff, thanked the Board and noted registrations for the events were strong.
Vice Chair Nimasheena Burns read a proclamation declaring Sept. 28, 2024 as Rooted in Wellness Day in Durham County and said St. Mark AME Zion Church (531 S. Roxboro Street) will host Durham’s local event. Karida Giddings of the North Carolina Black Alliance thanked the Board and confirmed the location.
The Board also unanimously adopted a resolution honoring Governor Roy Cooper’s public service, citing his COVID-19 leadership, advocacy for Medicaid expansion and investments in public education, affordable housing and environmental protection that the resolution says benefited Durham County. Chair Allam, Commissioner Brenda Howerton and Commissioner Wendy Jacobs read the resolution together and the Board thanked Governor Cooper for his service.
All three items were adopted by unanimous consent and Commissioners thanked staff and community partners for their work organizing the events and drafting the proclamations and resolution.
