Durham commissioners back federal legislative priorities including Homes Act and digital equity support

Durham County officials told the Board on Aug. 26 that the county must submit its 2025 federal legislative goals to the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners by Oct. 4, and commissioners asked staff to support a set of priorities intended to promote housing, economic opportunity and equity.
Deborah Craig-Ray, the county’s chief communications officer, reviewed the county’s 2022 goals and presented proposed 2025 priorities. The Board asked staff to support the Homes Act, expanded funding and flexible restrictions for the Federal Housing Tax Program, expanded access to artificial-intelligence and drone technology for Historically Black Colleges and Universities, a Domestic Worker Bill of Rights, compensation for unpaid family caregivers, a $6,000 earned income child tax credit, and items carried forward from the 2022 goals.
Craig-Ray said she would provide the final 2025 Federal Legislative Goals to the Board before submitting them to the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners. The board noted the submission deadline and that it would not meet again before Oct. 4, prompting the request to finalize the county’s positions in this meeting.
