Durham County Extension staff and consultants presented community engagement findings from a USDA-funded feasibility study exploring a proposed Farm Campus. Donna Rewalt, County Extension Director, said CoSpero led countywide engagement including surveys of aspiring, beginning and established farmers, food entrepreneurs and community partners to identify needed components and barriers to agricultural business development.
Rewalt said staff plan to arrange a fall site visit for commissioners to view a proposed location. She noted that funding for later phases could be affected by the 2024 federal elections but that a Phase 2 of the USDA Urban Agriculture Innovative Production program could provide equipment and implementation support. The Board asked that the feasibility study be presented to the Open Space and Trails Committee for further review.
