Sarah Martin, Public Arts Coordinator, said artists use a special sealant before and after painting and that the program maintains a touch-up plan for murals.
Brenda Hayes-Bright, Project Manager/Public Arts Manager, told the Board that site budget and suitability guide whether a mural or sculpture is selected, noting murals are considerably less expensive than sculptures. E—vonne Coleman-Cook of the Durham Cultural Advisory Board urged stronger efforts to support local artists, including business opportunities, affordable studio spaces and long-term planning to expand community-centered public art.
Staff said the Public Art Program partners with Discover Durham to develop an interactive public-art tour and will consider budget and site needs when proposing installations. The Board did not take formal action but discussed support for local-artist pathways and programming.
