Parma Heights on Sept. 12 introduced a new police K-9 donated and outfitted through a grant from the A. Ripepi Family, with Officer Bradd Smith sworn in as the dog's handler.
Mayor Gallo and Police Chief Scharschmidt said the family’s gift covered the cost of the dog, training and some vehicle outfitting. Chief Scharschmidt described the dog, named Gunny, as trained to detect narcotics, locate articles and assist in detaining fleeing suspects. The chief also introduced members of his clerk staff during the presentation and thanked administration for helping bring the project to fruition.
Officer Bradd Smith took the oath to serve as the department’s K-9 handler. Council President Tom Rounds and other members of council offered applause and public thanks during the presentation.
The presentation did not include a council vote; it was given as part of the mayor and directors segment of the meeting. The administration did not provide a timetable for patrol deployment during the meeting.
