Parma Heights officials outline safety-camera rollout, leaf-collection plans and fall events

Parma Heights officials reported a string of near-term service and community updates at the Oct. 11 City Council meeting that affect public safety, waste collection and seasonal events.
Recreation Director Allen said the city has partnered with the Central State University Extension Office to offer free classes, including food-preparation sessions with supplies provided at no cost to residents. "They will offer those at no cost to the city. They will have staff come and teach them and bring all the supplies also at no cost to the residents to participate as well," Allen said.
Safety Director Heffernan told council the police department’s new body and dash cameras are expected to be "all installed and operational, and fully integrated" on Oct. 20. Heffernan also said the department established a designated "safety zone" at the police station for people to conduct exchanges of goods safely; Councilwoman DeSouza and Mayor Marie Gallo credited the chief and mayor for advancing the idea.
Service Director Robert Sepik said the next bulk rubbish pickup is scheduled for Oct. 19, and that leaf collection will start once crews see substantial piles. Sepik said possible start dates are Oct. 31 or Nov. 7 depending on conditions; the city will post routes and notices via Facebook, Ready Notify and the mayor’s newsletter and may add trucks if volumes require. Sepik noted the city follows the same route each year and will add a second crew to speed collection by working opposite sides of streets when needed.
Mayor Marie Gallo reported the senior center served 1,244 meals over a recent two-week period and said the city will provide transportation for seniors to obtain flu shots and to vote on Nov. 8. She also urged residents to sign up for Ready Notify, which the city is using for both emergency and routine notifications.
Officials also listed several community events: "Creatures of the Commons" on Oct. 22, trick-or-treating on Oct. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m., a tree-lighting on Nov. 27 and plans for a Breakfast with Santa event. Recreation staff said they will pilot ballroom-dance sessions for seniors during winter months.
Council members did not take formal action on these service items during the meeting. The city’s schedule for budget hearings and department presentations was noted for upcoming meetings.
