Fire Rescue Chief Leslie Goodrum told the Simpson County Fiscal Court on Dec. 19 that he is proposing a lateral-transfer hiring policy to recruit fully trained, veteran firefighters from other departments.
Goodrum said lateral transfers would allow the department to hire experienced personnel without those hires losing previous time served or benefits status, creating an incentive to attract certified drivers and other qualified firefighters. He identified the greatest immediate need as qualified drivers and said he will continue advertising for entry-level positions while the court considers adopting the lateral-transfer approach. Goodrum also reported that a planned fire station renovation has been completed.
The fiscal court received the proposal for consideration; no formal action adopting a lateral-transfer policy was taken at the Dec. 19 meeting.
