SBA outlines disaster assistance for businesses; county announces CERT training

Monica Myles, Public Affairs Specialist with the Small Business Administration's Office of Recovery & Resilience, briefed Simpson County Fiscal Court on federal disaster assistance available to businesses and nonprofits affected economically — not necessarily physically — by the Dec. 9, 2023 weather event in Tennessee.
Myles said the SBA program can provide low-interest loans: 3.25% for nonprofits and 4% for businesses, with terms up to 30 years. According to the presentation, borrowers would have no interest accrued and no payments required during the first year, and funds could be available as soon as five days after the application process is complete. Myles directed interested organizations to sba.gov/disaster or 1-800-659-2955 for more information and application assistance.
Later in the session Emergency Management Director Robert Palmer announced that the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will offer a 30-hour emergency preparedness course beginning Feb. 1 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Blewett Bradley Building. The course is free but requires pre-registration.
The court also thanked Public Works crews and private volunteers for clearing county roads during the recent snow event and acknowledged the Sheriff's Department for assisting motorists.
