Cheatham County body appoints William Jeffery Bennett to 1st District School Board seat

William Jeffery Bennett was appointed Oct. 12 by the Cheatham County Legislative Body to fill the unexpired 1st District School Board seat left by David Bibee.
The special called session met in the General Sessions Courtroom in Ashland City. After a roll-call selection process, a subsequent formal motion to appoint Bennett was moved by Commissioner Gary Binkley and seconded by Commissioner Eugene O. Evans, Sr.; the appointment passed by roll call 10 Yes, 0 No, with two commissioners absent. County Clerk Teresa Gupton administered the Oath of Office the same evening and commissioners offered congratulations.
The vacancy was filled after the body first conducted a selection vote among four nominees. Commissioners nominated William Jeffery Bennett, David Anderson, Don Azbill and Jane Crisp; the initial roll-call selection yielded seven votes for Bennett and three for Crisp (see Resolution 2). Chairman Pro Tem Tim Williamson clarified the procedure for the selection vote, stating that if no nominee receives a majority in the first round, the candidate with the fewest votes is removed for the next round.
Sheriff Mike Breedlove called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m.; Jeff Bennett offered the invocation and County Clerk Teresa Gupton called the roll. With ten commissioners present, Chairman Pro Tem Tim Williamson declared a quorum (see Resolution 1). Public forum was opened briefly at 7:03 p.m. and closed at 7:04 p.m., during which Commissioner Gary Binkley thanked the candidates who applied for the vacancy.
After formalizing the appointment and administering the oath, the body adjourned at 7:15 p.m. by a motion approved by voice vote (see Resolution 4). The appointment fills the remainder of the term previously held by David Bibee; the minutes do not specify the term end date.
