Commission hears jail overcrowding report; approves small facility repairs

Cheatham County commissioners on July 17 heard from officials that the county jail is overcrowded and was briefly evacuated because of heavy smoke, though the incident was resolved.
At the meeting, Mr. Bamman reported the jail’s overcrowding and said the facility had to be evacuated because of heavy smoke; J.J. Hannah noted a meeting with COPE to discuss a jail study was scheduled for July 24 at 6:00 P.M. in the General Session Courtroom.
Separately, the Capital Improvements Committee recommended—and the commission approved—funding for several facility repairs: a new roof on the Highway Department administration building for $6,161; glass installation for the County Clerk’s Office and the Veterans Services Office for $805.18; pressure washing and painting labor for the Old Jail building for $7,500; and replacement glass in the jail for $5,500. Each project passed by roll call vote (11 yes, 0 no, 1 absent).
