Commission approves Cumberland Heights rezoning, tables Animal Control appointments and sets mayoral vacancy timeline

At a public hearing opened May 15, Dan Barge III of Barge Cauthen & Associates spoke for Cumberland Heights Foundation, Inc., requesting rezoning of 66.5 acres at 1062 Highway 70 in Pegram from E-1 to CPUD. After the hearing closed, the commission approved the zone change by roll-call vote 11–0 (Resolution 19).
During public forum Cindy Weiss (5th district) asked commissioners to reconstruct Animal Control guidelines and the related committee; Aram Gupta (6th district) spoke in support of animals and Alexa Bessler invited the public to a spay-and-neuter clinic May 20. The Calendar, Rules and Nominating committee previously moved to table appointments to the Animal Control Committee until a County Mayor is appointed; that motion was withdrawn and replaced by a motion to table the appointments indefinitely, which passed 9–2 (Resolution 20).
Separately, the commission approved the timeline and procedures for filling the vacancy in the office of County Mayor by roll-call vote 11–0 (Resolution 21). Public commenter James Gupton (4th district) announced his interest in applying for the County Mayor position; the commission record does not indicate any nomination or selection at the May 15 meeting.
Next steps: county staff will record the zoning change in official land-use files and proceed with any required administrative steps; the Animal Control Committee appointments remain tabled indefinitely until further action by the commission.
