A special called session of the Cheatham County Legislative Body on April 7, 2017, in the General Sessions Courtroom in Ashland City appointed Commissioner Donnie Jordan as Acting Mayor after County Attorney Michael Bligh told the body that elected County Mayor David McCullough was taking sick leave lasting more than 21 days.
Bligh told commissioners that the mayor's extended leave gave the commission the option to appoint the commission chair as Acting Mayor while the elected mayor remained the officeholder unless he discharges his duties or a vacancy occurs. Commissioner Diana Pike Lovell moved to appoint Donnie Jordan as Acting Mayor; Commissioner Gary Binkley seconded the motion.
The commission approved the motion by roll-call vote, recorded in the minutes as 11 in favor, 0 opposed and 1 abstention. The minutes list each commissioner's vote and show that Donnie Jordan recorded the single abstention. After the vote, Vice Chairman Tim Williamson assumed the chair for the remainder of the meeting.
Commissioner Walter Weakley moved, with a second from Gary Binkley, to nominate Commissioner Dale McCarver as Acting Vice Chairman; that nomination was approved by voice vote. The County Clerk, Teresa Gupton, asked whether an oath should be administered; after the County Attorney requested a brief recess to research the matter, the body recessed for five minutes and reconvened. County Clerk Teresa Gupton then administered the Acting Mayor oath to Donnie Jordan.
With no further business, Commissioner Gary Binkley moved and Commissioner Walter Weakley seconded to adjourn; the meeting adjourned at 6:25 p.m. The minutes reference Resolution 1 through Resolution 5 in connection with roll call and approvals; the text of those resolutions is cited in the minutes but not included in the transcript provided.
