Committee approves land purchase for Pigeon Forge convenience center; schedules June 13 budget meeting

The Sevier County Budget Committee on May 25 approved contracting with 'Mr. Freeman' to purchase an original lot plus an additional rear lot for a new Pigeon Forge Convenience Center so the project complies with Pigeon Forge zoning. Commissioner Ronnie Whaley moved the motion; Commissioner Kent Woods seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Mayor Larry Waters told the committee that CDM Smith will present on the Veterans Boulevard extension at the June 13 called Budget Committee meeting and that he intends to propose using American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to cover the County's portion of that state contract. The committee will receive the proposed FY2024 budget before that meeting.
Mayor Waters and Vice Mayor Bryan McCarter outlined a new comp time policy that will be proposed to the full County Commission. Sevier County Sheriff Michael Hodges explained how comp time is applied to emergency-service personnel. The committee also recorded a request from District Attorney General James Dunn to review the salary of 'Mr. Cole' and the mayor's reminder that the County is in ongoing litigation with the Public Defenders Office.
The committee adjourned at 1:19 p.m.
