Franklin County commissioners on May 18 authorized submission of federal and state grant applications and approved two multi‑year lease‑purchase agreements for office copiers in county departments.
Grants: The commission authorized staff to file applications to: a) the U.S. Bureau of Justice Assistance for two public‑safety grants including a Bringing the Lost Home proposal for Emergency Management (EMA) operations, b) the Bureau’s Correctional Adult Reentry Education, Employment and Recidivism Reduction Strategies (CAREERS) program for the county’s Community Reentry Program, and c) a state VOCA (Victims of Crime Act) grant proposal for victim reentry services. Motions to authorize the grant applications passed by the recorded votes and voice votes noted in the minutes. The Finance Committee had earlier recommended the applications be pursued.
Copier leases: The board also authorized two multi‑year lease‑purchase and maintenance contracts with Konica Minolta for the sheriff’s booking area and for the Community Reentry Program; the contracts were presented as five‑year fair‑market-value leases with maintenance included. Commissioners said the agreements will be executed by the county mayor and finance director on behalf of the county and that the leased equipment will be paid from departmental budgets.
Why it matters: the grant applications are aimed at funding specialized programs — reentry education and victim services — that Franklin County staff have said support offender rehabilitation and reduce recidivism. The copier leases are smaller operational measures intended to replace outdated office equipment and consolidate printing and scanning capabilities within county operations.
