Claiborne County Commission defeats proposed $2.38 property-tax levy; appropriations resolution remains on the floor

TAZEWELL, Tenn. — The Claiborne County Commission on July 15 voted down a proposed property tax levy of $2.38 per $100 of assessed value, 10–11, after debate during the commission’s regular meeting at the county courthouse.
The motion to adopt the levy (Res. 2024-046) was made by Commissioner Steve Brogan and seconded by Commissioner Eric Jones. Commissioners voting for the levy were Nathan Epperson, Mike Campbell, Tim Shrout, Anthony Rowe, Mitchell Cosby, Steve Brogan, Eric Jones, Sherry McCreary, Quintin Rogers and Dustin Wilson. Commissioners voting against were Zachary Bunch, Dennis Cook, Whitt Shuford, Haley Barker, Gary Poore, Stacey Crawford, Zach Mullins, Rosemary Barnett, Carolyn Brooks, Steve Mason and David Mundy.
Earlier in the meeting, Commissioner Mitchell Cosby moved to suspend the rules to allow further discussion or action on the county’s budget appropriations resolution for fiscal 2024–25 (Res. 2024-045); Commissioner Carolyn Brooks seconded and the motion carried on a roll-call vote of 20 for, 0 against (one commissioner was not present for that vote). Chairman Mike Campbell then placed the appropriations resolution on the floor for discussion, but no final vote or additional action on that resolution was taken during the session.
The defeat of the proposed levy leaves the commission without approval of the specific $2.38 rate at this meeting; the appropriations resolution also remains unresolved. The meeting record does not specify a next scheduled vote date for the appropriations resolution.
