Commission tables restructuring plan, reappoints budget committee with amended membership

A proposal to restructure committee procedures and commissioner pay was debated and tabled at the Claiborne County Commission’s Nov. 20 meeting. Commissioner Whitt Shuford moved an amendment to maintain existing committees except dissolve the budget committee, create a pre-meeting workshop two weeks before regular meetings for the entire commission, and set pay at $175 per workshop and $175 per commission meeting intending to involve all 21 commissioners in the budget process. Commissioner Brooks seconded the amendment.

After discussion, Commissioner David Mundy moved to table the restructuring item; the motion to table passed 16-4, and the restructuring proposal (Res. 2023-123) was tabled for future consideration.

Separately, the commission considered Resolution 2023-113 to re-appoint and confirm membership of the Budget Committee and to accept several committee membership changes. Multiple motions were made regarding membership reassignments; the final roll-call on the original motion as amended carried 18-2. The minutes record specific membership swaps and appointments (for example, certain commissioners relinquished and others assumed seats on the Budget Committee) and note Commissioner Quinton Rogers resigned from the Senior Citizens committee; Commissioner David Mundy was appointed to that committee by motion.

Next steps: Res. 2023-123 remains tabled and will be revisited at a future meeting; Resolution 2023-113 takes effect as the commission recorded updated budget-committee membership.
