Claiborne County Commission approves grants, budget amendments, road-list updates and property sales

At its Feb. 20 meeting in Tazewell, the Claiborne County Commission approved a package of resolutions covering grants, budget amendments, highway work and the sale of several county-owned parcels.
Key approvals included:
- A $200,000 budget amendment to fund urgent repairs to a county bridge on Little Sycamore Road after it failed a state inspection; work was bid to Whaley Construction and the bridge was noted as not currently eligible for state aid (RES. 2024-005). The measure passed 21-0.
- A Court Security reimbursement grant of $83,872 through the State Administrative Office of the Courts to purchase bulletproof panels, panic buttons, upgraded cameras, keycards, a metal detector, video arraignment capability and transportation restraints; the resolution specifies the grant is reimbursement-based and that final receipts are due by June 7, 2024 (RES. 2024-007). The commission amended the resolution to state there will be no cost to the county; vote 21-0.
- A ThreeStar tourism grant of $50,000 to add two lanes to Brogan's Boat Ramp on Norris Lake (RES. 2024-004), and a $15,000 TCI training and equipment grant for the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office to support a Direct Incident Response Team (RES. 2024-001); both grants were approved unanimously.
- Several school-related budget actions were approved, including a $350,000 transfer from the General Purpose School Fund to the Federal Projects Fund to avoid a cash deficit, an insurance-recovery allocation of $170,701.54 for hail damage at Claiborne High School, and smaller nutrition and grant allocations (RES. 2024-008, 2024-011–013). These were approved as combined motions.
- Resolutions directing the county attorney to advertise and sell multiple parcels the county acquired via delinquent tax sale were approved unanimously; minimum starting bids were set at $1,000 for each parcel (RES. 2024-019, 022–027).
- The county road list for January 2024 was approved as required by state law (RES. 2024-006), and Triple S Court (1/10 mile) received first reading for addition to the county-maintained road list (RES. 2024-021).
Other administrative items approved included travel-policy updates to align per diem and mileage with state and IRS rates (RES. 2024-003, 19 for/2 against) and a vehicle transfer to the sanitation department (RES. 2024-020).
Most measures were presented by department heads or sponsors and passed with roll-call confirmation where required. The commission combined multiple related school and property-sale resolutions into grouped votes to streamline the agenda.
