Claiborne County Commission votes to close portion of Fords Chapel Road, convey land to purchaser

The Claiborne County Commission voted 18 to 3 on Feb. 20 to close a portion of Fords Chapel Road running from State Highway 33 west to New Hope Road and to convey that closed segment and the adjacent state right-of-way to purchaser Anthony Mountain.
Commissioner Nathan Epperson moved the resolution to close and convey the road, and the motion was seconded and carried after discussion. Commissioners David Cook, Haley Barker and Eric Jones recorded the three opposing votes. The resolution states the road does not serve any county purpose and directs removal of the segment from the county road list and its conveyance to Anthony Mountain.
The resolution also requests that the State of Tennessee convey the old state right-of-way in front of the former store building to the purchaser. The commission record names Nathan Epperson as a sponsor on the resolution and notes the County Road Superintendent advised the portion should remain closed.
The action follows staff advice and a parcel conveyance plan; the resolution specifies the county will declare the roadway surplus for transfer. The decision does not, according to the text of the resolution, include any immediate county-funded work on the property.
The commission passed the closure during its regular meeting at the Claiborne County Courthouse in Tazewell. The resolution directs the county attorney and relevant county offices to complete the conveyance and associated paperwork.
