County Finance Director Pearman reported to the Claiborne County Commission that the county’s ambulance subsidy to Claiborne Medical is $13,750 per month. Under the existing subsidy arrangement, Pearman said Claiborne Medical may request one ambulance per year. He told commissioners a verbal request has been made for an ambulance with an estimated purchase price of about $175,000.
Pearman told the commission that, given the current escrow balance and the potential ambulance purchase, the county would need to execute a budget amendment to use escrow funds and to preserve monthly subsidy payments. He said additional money would also need to be added to the next year’s budget to cover both the purchase and ongoing subsidy costs.
The commission had earlier (Item #9) approved the finance director’s report on the ambulance subsidy for FY2024 by motion. The Nov. 20 minutes record the later discussion (Item #17) as an informational briefing; no formal purchase motion or amendment was recorded at the Nov. 20 meeting.
Next steps: any purchase would require a formal budget amendment and a subsequent recorded vote. The minutes do not record a completed purchase authorization; the county will need to reconcile escrow balances and include necessary appropriations in future budget work.
