The Claiborne County Commission on Dec. 18 approved two actions affecting the Sheriff's Office.
First, Res. 2023-129 accepts a $1,000 donation from Walmart to be used for community-event supplies. Commissioner Dustin Wilson moved the measure and Commissioner Carolyn Brooks seconded; the motion carried.
Second, Res. 2023-130 amends the county budget to recognize an additional $203,915 in Statewide School Resource Officer (SRO) grant revenue for the 2023-2024 fiscal year. The resolution states the SRO grant can provide up to $75,000 per school, with a maximum program total of $900,000. The amendment allocates the newly recognized revenue to SRO salaries, law enforcement supplies, equipment and motor vehicle purchases (the resolution specifies $150,000 for motor vehicles among other allocations). Commissioner Wilson moved the SRO amendment; Commissioner Tim Shrout seconded. The roll call recorded 21 in favor, 0 opposed.
Both measures were approved without changes; the resolutions say the adjustments will not affect property taxes or the county fund balance beyond recognizing grant revenue.
