County Mayor Joe Brooks informed the Claiborne County Commission on Oct. 16 that School Board Member Shannon England (District 6) has resigned after moving out of her district, creating a vacancy on the school board.
County Attorney Estep advised commissioners on the statutory process for filling the vacancy and the options for appointing a replacement to serve until the next general election. Commissioner David Mundy moved to suspend the rules and direct the county clerk to publish notice of the vacancy and that the commission would fill the position at the November meeting; Commissioner Sherry McCreary seconded and the motion carried by aye vote.
The commission did not name a replacement at the Oct. 16 meeting; the published notice will invite potential applicants and the appointment is scheduled for the November meeting.
