Residents press commissioners on roadside weeds, animal shelter hiring and nuisance property

Several residents used the citizens forum Sept. 17 to press the commission on local service issues.
Bonnie Evans asked about spraying weeds along county roads. Ellona Bateman Lee questioned why the animal shelter position was not publicly posted and whether animal rescues would continue; she asked about experience requirements for an Animal Control Officer. Horace Bell raised concerns about unmowed properties in his district and handicap parking related to the courthouse project. Wesley Tarr urged commissioners study Robert’s Rules of Order.
In commissioners forum, Rachelle Hill cited statutes and minutes history regarding the handling of a prior resolution and urged the mayor to act on nuisance property at 75 Java Lane; Mayor Lashlee said the law enforcement committee should be informed and pledged action to "clean up the county." Later in the meeting Sheriff Kenny Christopher and Mark Florence, director of schools, reported that funds will be needed for two school resource officers and that figures would be provided at the next meeting.
The exchanges highlighted resident concerns about local maintenance, animal-shelter staffing and school safety funding; commissioners and the mayor directed follow-up in committee and at the October meeting where several items will return to the agenda.
