Martin Street residents press county for maintenance after engineering finds public right-of-way

Residents of Martin Street told the Tazewell County Planning Commission on Nov. 14 that county maintenance of their road stopped around 2002 and asked for help getting the road included in the county maintenance system.
Kenneth Dunford Jr., director of county engineering, and County Attorney Chase Collins reported the portion of Martin Street under discussion appears to have public right-of-way. The minutes say the roads committee plans to meet and inspect the road before the commission’s Dec. 12 regular meeting.
Residents Sally Perkins, Williams Andrews and Robert and Lena Whitt described past maintenance and presented a copy of a Nov. 13, 2024, edition of The Voice documenting their request for county assistance. Mr. Andrews specifically stated maintenance stopped around 2002; county engineering and attorney staff said they have not found records showing county maintenance of the road.
Commissioners advised the residents to attend the PSA board meeting and contact their district supervisor. The minutes do not record a formal vote on whether to add the road to the county maintenance system; they record a planned inspection by the roads committee as the next procedural step.
