The Tazewell County Planning Commission on Nov. 14 approved a deed of conveyance that will allow the county to acquire land near Macky Lane on B F Buchanan Hwy (Back of the Dragon) for a two-panel billboard featuring “Virginia is for Lovers” and “Back of the Dragon.” Member Jason Herndon moved the approval and Member Lance Wimmer seconded; the motion passed 6–0 with Member Kyle Cruey recorded as abstaining.
Director of County Engineering Kenneth Dunford Jr. recommended the commission approve the conveyance and waive the usual division fee and the state road and sewer-connection variances because the parcel’s intended use will be limited to billboard signage. The minutes state the county needs to wholly own the location to permit the billboard installation.
The commission recorded approval of the deed with Dunford’s contingencies noted. The minutes do not list a purchase price, date of acquisition or further permitting steps; they do record Member Cruey’s abstention but do not give a reason.
County staff or the board of supervisors are expected to handle the acquisition and any subsequent permits; the planning commission’s action clears the way administratively for county ownership of the parcel.
