Bland County supervisors approve $300,000 school budget supplement, add maintenance position and July 3 local holiday

Chairman Adam Kidd presided over the Bland County Board of Supervisors’ regular meeting on June 27, 2023, where the board approved a $300,000 supplemental appropriation to the Bland County School Board’s FY23 operations and maintenance budget.
The supplemental appropriation, moved by Supervisor Keith Costello and seconded by Supervisor Stephen Kelley, passed on a roll-call vote with Costello, Kelley and Chairman Kidd recorded as voting yea. The board previously amended the meeting agenda to include the budget item before taking the vote.
The budget action was one of several final items the board adopted during the meeting’s business portion. The board also approved its consent agenda, which included payroll for May 31 ($116,648.68) and June 16 ($117,726.65); May bills totaling $99,839.58 and June bills totaling $478,685.88; departmental reports; appropriation of April 2023 Social Services local allotment ($67,646.20); and the Bland County School Board’s July 2023 requisition ($1,031,292.75). Supervisor Stephen Kelley moved the consent agenda and Supervisor Keith Costello seconded; the roll call recorded Kelley, Costello and Kidd voting in favor.
County Administrator Cameron Burton presented several administrator items implemented by board motions. The board adopted trash-bill adjustments for April through June 2023 totaling $1,391.54, approved July 3, 2023 as a local county holiday, and approved the addition of a county maintenance staff position effective in FY24. Those motions were approved unanimously.
The public comment period drew no speakers. The meeting concluded after a motion to adjourn by Supervisor Stephen Kelley, seconded by Supervisor Keith Costello. The board set its next regular meeting for July 25, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. at the Bland County Courthouse in Bland, Virginia.
