The Tazewell County Planning Commission on July 10 recommended that the Board of Supervisors revise the county’s Comprehensive Plan to accommodate a drainage improvement project on Amonate Road.
County Engineering Director Kenneth Dunford told the commission a pre-application has been submitted and that the proposed project would be a 50/50 revenue-sharing arrangement with the Virginia Department of Transportation, with each side responsible for $64,000. Dunford said Coal Severance has agreed to pay Tazewell County’s share. He estimated construction would begin three to four years after final approval and said a public hearing will be necessary before the Board grants final authorization.
Vice‑Chairman Jason Herndon moved that the commission recommend the Comprehensive Plan be revised to include the Amonate Road drainage improvement; Member Hayden Lyons seconded and the motion passed 5 to 0, with Member Kyle Cruey absent. The recommendation now moves to the Board of Supervisors, which must hold the required public hearing before final approval and any contracting or construction can proceed.
