Grant will place behavioral prevention specialists in Tazewell County schools

Lori Gates-Addison told the Community Policy and Management Team on Sept. 27, 2021, that she had applied for and been awarded a grant to fund Behavioral Prevention Specialists. The grant provides for one specialist in Tazewell County and two in surrounding counties; the specialists will be based in schools and will assess children over a three-day period to identify and address behavioral issues. Gates-Addison said the positions have not yet been filled.
Sheri Hale, of the Tazewell County Department of Social Service, reported that there were 12 residential placements as of September 2021 and that two of those placements are expected to step down to foster-home placements. Hale said that adoptions taking place in FY21 and continuing into FY22 have reduced both the number of Children’s Services Act (CSA) cases and CSA spending.
The team also discussed qualifications and procedures for accessing PSSF and WRAP funds; Melinda Smith (Tazewell County Public Schools), Shanun Smith (as listed in the minutes) and Sheri Hale spoke with the group about next steps for pursuing those funding streams. The CPMT reviewed the OCS October calendar and noted a Sexual Exploitation Treatment & Training scheduled for Oct. 12–13, 2021 (the minutes list 'OCS' without expanding the acronym). The minutes record the announcement and the funding discussion but do not specify dollar amounts or hiring timelines for the specialist positions.
The CPMT subsequently moved into a certified closed session to discuss individual cases and related funding; those case details are not included in the public minutes.
