CPMT reviews CQI trends, announces new CSA coordinator and holds certified closed session

At its Nov. 22 meeting, Tazewell County’s CPMT compared CQI reports across three counties, discussed attendance enforcement and announced a new CSA coordinator starting Dec. 1; the Team then entered a certified closed session to discuss foster-care and related cases.
Members of the Tazewell County Community Policy and Management Team reviewed continuous-quality-improvement (CQI) reports from Tazewell, Russell and Buchanan counties and discussed program-level reasons for differences in expenditures and residential foster-care cases.
Lori Gates-Addison, who represents the three-county CPMT perspective, said she believed Russell County’s lower net expenditures and fewer residential foster-care cases were linked to The Cottage Program and a larger number of local DSS foster homes. Sheri Hale added that the state has been encouraging more Fictive Kin placements and noted Tazewell County currently has more young adults remaining in care while taking advantage of Independent Living and Fostering Futures programs.
On staffing, Ms. Shanun Smith announced she is taking another position at Tazewell County DSS and that a newly hired CSA Coordinator will begin Dec. 1, 2021. Ms. Smith said she will train the incoming coordinator and will be the backup if the new coordinator is absent.
The Team also discussed mandated-member attendance requirements in local policy — members must attend at least 50% of meetings or be dismissed and replaced — and agreed to revisit enforcement of that rule at the December 2021 meeting.
Near the close of the meeting, Robin Boyd moved that the CPMT go into closed session to discuss foster-care, CPS, Cumberland, Court Services, Tazewell County Schools cases and related funding; Melinda Smith seconded and the motion carried unanimously. The Team then adopted the Virginia Freedom of Information Act certification required by the Code of Virginia (§2.2-3711 and §2.2-3712) confirming the closed meeting discussed only lawfully exempted matters.
