VDOT bridge closures, planned noise ordinance hearing and radio-system swap among infrastructure updates

County and state transportation and public-safety updates were a recurring theme at Lunenburg County’s Oct. 12 Board of Supervisors meeting.
Kevin Smith of the Virginia Department of Transportation told the board that crews are completing second mowing countywide and replacing pipes, and that Route 624 (Molasses Hill Road) over the Nottoway River will be closed for bridge repairs for three days starting Oct. 24 with detour routes posted. He said bridge work on Eubank Road is scheduled for completion in early to mid-November and that a Route 46 bridge project at the Nottoway/Brunswick border is expected to take 15–18 months, delayed initially by material shortages.
On local public-safety policy, County Attorney Frank Rennie presented a draft ordinance addressing excessive vehicle exhaust noise after the Sheriff’s Office reported noticing more incidents. The board voted unanimously to advertise a public hearing on the proposed ordinance for the Nov. 9 meeting so residents can comment prior to any adoption.
Administrator Tracy M. Gee thanked Rodney and Mrs. Newton for their work on the new E911 radio system; she said E911 dispatchers will begin training the next week and the county plans to switch to the new radio system county-wide on Nov. 14, with the school system switching after the Christmas break to allow for bus integration. Administrator Gee also noted airport paving is ongoing and Airport Manager Larry Way is tracking electrical issues on runway lighting.
What happens next: VDOT will implement posted detours for the Route 624 closure starting Oct. 24; the county will advertise the vehicle-exhaust public hearing for Nov. 9 and accept public comment; dispatch training and the Nov. 14 radio cutover are planned.
