Lunenburg schools mark two longtime administrators’ retirements; superintendent reports enrollment and safety protocol

The Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors on Oct. 12 adopted resolutions recognizing the retirements of two longtime school officials: Charles M. Berkley Jr., who retired as School Superintendent on Sept. 1 after 27 years with the system, and James M. Abernathy Jr., who retired June 30 after 40 years as Assistant Superintendent and Finance Director.
Supervisor Edward Pennington moved to accept resolutions honoring both men; the board approved the motions unanimously. The resolutions commend each for years of service and wish them well in retirement.
At the same meeting, Jamyce Watson, Director of Finance for Lunenburg Schools, provided an updated financial report and said the local match amount for June 2023 had been met and the current Average Daily Membership (ADM) stands at 1,483 compared with the State-budgeted membership of 1,510. School Superintendent Dr. Sharon Stanislas told the board the architect for Central High School will present Phase 1 blueprints to the School Board on Oct. 23 as the capital-improvement process proceeds.
Dr. Stanislas also addressed a school-safety matter: she told the board the school administration responded to an electronic threat reported at Central High School, followed protocol by involving law enforcement and determined the threat "turned out not to be credible." She added similar types of threats have been reported nationally and stressed the importance of following safety protocols.
What happens next: the School Board will receive the architect’s Phase 1 presentation; school administrators will continue to follow established safety protocols and coordinate with local law enforcement as needed.
