Lunenburg supervisors accept $1.1 million in state school funds, approve payroll change and radio system supplement

At the Jan. 11 meeting the Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors accepted $1,097,570 in additional state funds for the local school division (Fund 1) and appropriated the money to the FY2024 School Board budget. School Superintendent Dr. Stanislas told the board the funds will support projects delayed by rising employee health care costs and a 2 percent salary increase; about $50,000 of the allocation is part of a safety and security grant. The superintendent said the updated budget is based on an average daily membership (ADM) of 1,485 and that no additional local funds are required.
The board also approved a change to school payroll procedures, moving from a two‑month accrual to a one‑month accrual starting in August 2024 so new ten‑ and eleven‑month employees receive their first paycheck earlier. Administrator Gee and Supervisor T. Wayne Hoover said the change will not require extra county funds and is intended to improve recruitment.
Separately, Administrator Gee presented change order #4 from L3Harris totaling $29,271.68 for the county radio system and reported Radio Cache funds were overexpended by $20,000. The board appropriated $29,271.68 for the change order and an additional $20,000 to cover the overage.
The board approved the consent agenda that included payroll and warrants totaling $1,372,598.34.
