Board approves grants participation, small transfers and several county purchases

During its April 11 meeting the Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors approved several administrative requests and purchases and took action on a fire ordinance and a pending waste‑management tonnage request.
Administrator Tracy M. Gee presented a request for the Sheriff’s Office to participate in a Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) grant that reimburses costs when deputies carry out temporary detention orders (TDOs) and emergency custody orders (ECOs). The Board approved participation with six votes in favor and Supervisor Greg Currin abstaining. The board also approved a $944.22 transfer from Sheriff Compensation Board vacancy savings to the office supplies line item with the same abstention pattern.
Social Services requested authority to purchase a 2019 Ford Explorer from Davis GMC Truck, Inc. in Farmville for $23,995 to provide space for multiple children and car seats; the Board approved using vacancy savings to fund the purchase. The Board also approved, using a SHSP Radio System Services Grant amendment at no county cost, purchase of pagers for fire service members from Ray’s Pager Sales for $51,444.
County Attorney Frank Rennie presented and the Board adopted (by roll call) a resolution approving an ordinance regulating or prohibiting the making of fires. Rennie also noted Meridian Waste had requested a DEQ-approved increase in tonnage from 1,500 to 2,000 tons per day; he said the Board has not approved the increase and he forwarded a letter to DEQ stating the Board is studying the impacts before taking action.
The approvals recorded several abstentions on the Sheriff’s items but otherwise were unanimous. Where purchases use grants or vacancy savings, the county reported no direct long‑term increase in operating costs at the meeting; the Board did not specify replacement timelines or operating‑cost impacts for the vehicle or pagers during the session.
